Moonstone Jewelry

In Hindu stories, Moonstones are moonlight made solid, and the Hindu faith is far from the only place Moonstones have been compared to the moon.
In this collection I have both Peach Moonstone jewelry and Larvikite, or Black Moonstone jewelry.
Moonstones are one of June’s Birthstones.
Moonstones are also thought to be a perfect stone to wear to weddings, and is a traditional gift between married couples for their 3rd Anniversary.
Moonstones are also thought to enhance your intuition and encourage clarity of thought and action.

Is Black Moonstone Real Moonstone?

Yes and no. Moonstones are a mineral in the feldspar group that come in a lot of different colors and forms. Labradorite is another mineral in the feldspar group that’s also used in jewelry, and you’ll notice that these two stones have a lot of shared features, including a blue adularescence, which is the name for the bluish glow that many Moonstones have.

In fact, almost any mineral in the feldspar group can be called a Moonstone if they have adularescence.

But, Moonstones are a specific mineral, and Black Moonstone, technically Larvikite, isn’t one of them. Peach Moonstone is, though Peach Moonstone rarely has adularescence.

Aren’t stone types fun!

Larvikite is often called Black Moonstone because it looks more similar to Moonstone than Labradorite, while sharing features with both. Larvikite is a part of the feldspar group of minerals as well, which is part of why many people know Larvikite as Black Moonstone.

So, is Larvikite technically Moonstone? No. But it is similar enough that for handmade jewelry, calling Larvikite Black Moonstone makes perfect sense.
